As I have mentioned before on the blog, my love for leather goods runs deep. The smell, the texture, the way every piece tells a story, I don’t believe there is another material like it! So when a local Finnish designer asked to do a collab, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity!

IMG_9895.jpg

Luava is a little company with big dreams. Established only a few short years ago, the designer has evolved a few simple goods into a full-fledged lifestyle!

IMG_9972.jpg

Impressive as that may be, the ideas just keep flowing. Which makes sense when the name itself is a play on words. In Finnish, luova means creative, and adding the extra a simply creates a more charming dialect to a beautiful word.

One huge perk from this collaboration is my new outstanding camera strap! Customized with a cheeky personal detail, it is easily my new obsession and just the right detail to boost my photography inspiration. Cause let’s be honest, these generic straps scream tourist! FullSizeRender.jpg

Huge thanks to Luava for this collaboration, and even more gratitude for my killer new camera accessory. Check out all of their creations here, and follow on Instagram here. Until next week,

Earlier this year, I went around town on a photo mission. Since then the seasons have changed, but my inspiration has lingered throughout the year. I found myself biking down a familiar route, and enjoying the contrasting architecture and water vistas of Helsinki.

The seasons have yet to turn officially, but autumn has surely made a mark in corners of the capital. Even though what matters most is that for now the warmth of the sun can still be felt on the skin, and the sky still does that big, blue, beautiful thing.

I am embracing the next season with open arms and an open mind. In hopes to welcome new changes in my habits, career, and perspective. Still apprehensive about the ominous winter that follows, it is time to shed past practices that no longer serve me. All this, whilst living in Helsinki.

When the going gets tough, the tough go to free events. Yeah, it was a rather frugal summer for our little family. So to avoid a summer stupor, I decided to be proactive about attending free local events. This plan not only exceeded my expectations, it has become a monthly ritual and new adventure in itself.

IMG_9614.jpg

There are a lot of museums in Helsinki, and to organize each individual free day took a bit of strategizing. Inherently, I created a little reference list to keep track of all the activity! So today, Friday, September 1st, the stars aligned when I had to post the same day as an open event!

IMG_9624.jpg

Kiasma is by far my favorite attraction in the city. Dead center, with one of the most intriguing interior architectural concepts I’ve ever experienced, the building is a an experience in itself. And to be frank, a free day in Helsinki is still slim pickins compared to most public attractions in larger cities.

Feel free to take a closer peek at my previous picture of the list I created. If you’re a local or just traveling through Finland, a museum visit is a must.

Until next week,

This week I am posting on location in a rough stream of consciousness. I have decided to continue with my evening, a well deserved date night with my beloved partner, and share some thoughts about this moment.

Although most of my Friday nights tend to grow more similar as the months go by, I am beginning to crave moments of spontaneity. In between the meals and beers, I am finally starting to feel humbled my surroundings. To be fair, lately, my environment has not been the most comforting aspect of my life. And this evening I can finally say with confidence my home soothes me.

August is my favorite month in Helsinki. I feel at ease with the climate, daylight hours, and reasonable work schedule of the people. Things feel mellow, and the extremes of the midnight sun and sunless winter are just passing thoughts.

Just like the ominous conversations I share with my husband about season finales for Game of Thrones, I have similar feelings towards the winter ahead. Although in this moment, next to the sea and a beer in hand, I feel grateful to be alive and breathing the Baltic air.

Until next week

The mail man just came by with what sounded like a large deposit in our mail slot. Much to my surprise, amongst old bills and magazines, I received a letter from a dear friend in Atlanta. I must confess to those whom I write regularly I have been a horrible pen pal this summer, and hardly licked a stamp in months. But this brings up a good theme I want to discuss this week… home.

IMG_7356 2.jpgWe have our home in our minds, home in our memories, and home on paper, usually where the mail is delivered. I have considered many different theories of what home is supposed to be or what it could be. My current understanding is that comes in moments. Moments when you feel something hygge, whether that is in your body, your house, or a familiar place.

I will admit the current address I reside used to terrify me. It is a long Finnish word with lots of vowels and every time I write a letter I question if it is spelled correctly. Regardless of inevitable spelling errors, it is where you can find me most of the time. Stretching out on my yoga mat, cooking in the kitchen, writing to dear friends on paper and the web, and sleeping every night next to the love of my life.

Home can be a lot of things, or it can be just one thing. Like the diversity in personalities across the millions of us in the world, our individual perception is just as unique. Pictures and quotes help to express these nostalgic emotions, but at the end of the day, it is your special place and experience.

This week I have some special images to share. The Design Museum of Helsinki has an exhibition in their back yard for the summer. A unique terrace structure was erected a few weeks ago, and since then it has been on my mind to take some photos for the blog. This is not the first public architectural exhibit they have hosted, but certainly is my favorite thus far!

IMG_7092.jpg

Recently primary color schemes have been catching my attention in the most magical of moments. I took this inspiration one step further to enjoy a pair of my brand new Ashley Buchanan Jewelry earrings. Her silhouette style fits seamlessly into the minimal Scandinavian architectural design of the terrace including this blue bench.

Keeping up with the theme, I had to keep things neutral for the ensemble. Although neutral for me is black, always black. This lovely jumpsuit is a special piece from my favorite store in the city, Dots. A local gem, and the best-kept secret for any of your LBD needs!

If this post has a soundtrack it would be My Favorite Things by the Lennon Sisters. I guess that is another hat trick here on  Nasty Trash! And if fashion, jewelry, or architecture are your favorite things, check out these links to learn more.

I have grown fond of groups in an instructional setting and in a creative environment. This week is no exception, I attended yet another workshop. That said, I failed to prepare, and did not double check the address on Google Maps before navigating the streets amidst Helsinki Pride Day. After a bit of a runaround, I managed to stumble in 15 minutes late. Thus, the photos here were not taken the day of the workshop, instead, it is a small sample of my Sunday.

IMG_6307.jpg

To preface this day, the Brush Lettering Workshop hosted by Tunagrafia held for an educational experience. The modern style of a classic practice was inspiring. I left with a reignited excitement for lettering, a new Rhodia paper pad, and 5 new writing utensils. One of which is the Tom Bow calligraphy pen, an instant favorite. This little gem creates all your favorite calligraphy curves, with the modern convenience of creative writing on the go.

IMG_6336.jpg

Trash Tip: If you are seeking to be better at hand lettering, practice random magazine quotes or music lyrics. This has to be one of my favorite writing exercises.

IMG_6347.jpg

Finally, I would like to mention this week that the combination of a personal creative outlet, combined with a new found excitement for lifestyle photography, and this perfect Sunday, has me feeling absolutely thrilled, a sensation that depreciates as the years go by. All my gratitude goes to this place to share content therefore, I prefer to no longer take beautiful hobbies, beautiful feelings, or beautiful days for granted.
