It is strange how you can wake up in a new mood, almost feel as if you are in a new place whilst standing in your bedroom. That’s not to say Fridays aren’t a great day, but there was something different about this morning. My energy felt good again like everything could flow naturally.

IMG_1708 2.jpg

I understand the hard times, the moments of low energy, the mood that turns into a day, a week, a month of distress. It encompasses more than a persons sleeping pattern, it affects who you see in the mirror. To be honest, sustaining positivity it is one of my biggest obstacles.

IMG_1763.jpg

Underlying all of that, I maintain a firm foundation in the belief that energy connects us all. Good thoughts go beyond conversations in the head. It takes work, energy flows based on the effort you put into it. Although it may feel the negative takes less effort, it could just be that it has become a habit. Any habit will feel effortless based on the theory of practice and repetition. So at first good thoughts feel like an uphill battle, but then suddenly, it happens naturally.

IMG_1748.jpg

Basically what I am trying to share with you this week is to keep the faith. If the energy in your life feels dull, dark, or negative, acknowledge it, and move on. All we can do in moments like that is be better in the next moment ahead. Like The Four Agreements state, simply do your best. The energy will respond accordingly.

This week my inspiration came from a few different places. The images collected are based on an Instagram challenge called #FreeUpMyInsta. Whilst following Alexia Booker (@LostFoundKeep) and her daily vlogs all month long, she mentioned a new challenge developed by Allison Sadler. It is a beautiful concept designed to motivate others to appreciate our day to day lives, and worry less about a number of likes, quality of content, or curated images. The following images are my interpretation of the challenge.

(1)IMG_1225

 1. Look Up // Lately, when you look up, grey skies surround the most unique colors of the year. This image is from my very own backyard. Although it may not seem like much, to me, this view changes and grows every day, just like me.

(2)IMG_1227

2. Inspiration // I quickly captured this image whilst briskly walking by. I am currently victim to the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, and vans are my repeated encounter. At some point in my life, I hope to live carefree in a van with the world as my backyard. But for now, I will continue to wander streets and fantasize about each van I see.

(3)IMG_1271

3. Bloom // While October is not famous for any new foliage, the colors are something similar to a firework show. I also enjoy the woman walking in the image, and the bundle of golden maple leaves she has collected to take home. I only imagine she has a craft to create or a seasonal centerpiece to display in her kitchen.

(4)IMG_1234

4. Simple Pleasures // Helsinki Trams. I love Helsinki Trams. The iconic yellow and green paint job is maybe one of my favorite things about the city. Only second to riding around enjoying the scenic streets and bayside sights pass by.

(5)IMG_1305

5. Friday Fun // Confession time, this image was taken on Tuesday. During this period of my life, I have had to adjust my schedule, routines, and sense of purpose. But the most rewarding part of it all has been the Tuesday afternoons that feel like Fridays. The moments when I can have a spontaneous adventure with my husband, despite time, location, or finances. Life has many seasons, and I know this one will not last forever, but I am going to soak it all up while I still can.

(6)IMG_1270

6. Explore // It was not clear how this image would turn out, but I am so pleased with the outcome. At 6ft tall I had to stretch my arms overhead to capture the top of this garden shed. It may not be your interpretation of exploration, but the way we view things can be a new adventure when given the chance to observe something from an alternative perspective. If anything, you will have no other choice except to explore the corners of your mind and wander your imagination.

(7)IMG_1253.jpg

7. Favorite // This is my favorite picture this week. A quiet back street makes the perfect autumn postcard image. I feel as though the picture speaks for itself.

This challenge was a great way to think differently about my day to day surroundings. I would like to encourage the challenge to all of you. It does not have to result in a blog post or an Instagram, but instead, consider the world around you in these seven themes. I hope it provokes a sense of awe and contempt as you actively engage with your surroundings.

As predicted, I have returned to the botanical gardens. This trip is more intimate than the inaugural, yet it was just as satisfying. A slow tram ride through the city carried me from my neighborhood to the garden entrance, and thus the adventure began.

IMG_1210.jpg

The content brings to light what I fail to experience in reality. The seasons are transitioning across the globe. Social media likes to remind us all when the change occurs, even if it is at the expense of our personal comfort. I enjoy seeing the leaves change color in Helsinki, the spring surf pictures from Cape Town, and the seasonal sunset shots people capture from around the world but take it too far at times and I begin to wonder why I’m not somewhere else.

IMG_1190.jpg

To respond to this global FOMO epidemic, the botanical gardens are my saving grace. On this particular day, I enjoyed the crisp autumn air, golden leafy textures, combined with dry cactus arrangements, humid rainforest foliage, and summer green aesthetic… all within a few meters from the other.

IMG_1128.jpg

I’m grateful for this little garden space. It is as if I can easily transport to a different scene, without a plane ticket, passport, or bikini wax, and experience something totally different than the moment before.

Until next week,

Last week was the Autumnal equinox, and two years ago marks the day I wed my best friend. In celebration of that fact, we decided to spend the weekend abroad in Denmark. The second anniversary is the cotton anniversary, and although we failed to find a cotton souvenir, we accomplished much more in our little trip.

IMG_0311.jpg

The weekend started in Copenhagen where we met up with an old friend from our time as exchange students. Without missing a beat we shared stories, breakfast, and memories just like when we all lived together years ago.

IMG_0399.jpg

Following a day of wandering the capital, we took a train to the little city of Odense. This is a small city and could easily be looked over on a map. Only famous for its past resident and renowned author, Hans Christian Andersen.

IMG_0495.jpg

We were smitten the whole weekend wandering this village. Our Airbnb was perfectly nestled in the center of the town, and as we explored the cobblestone roads, church bells would serenade our adventure.

Denmark is a wonderful place, and it is my mission to return frequently and learn more about their enlightening culture. As for our anniversary weekend, it was magic, as is every day being married to the one I love.

My mind is elsewhere this Friday… in the hours before Hurricane Irma hits the US coast I can’t help but think about every family, friend, and soul I know in its path. With no words of wisdom, or any inspiration¬†to find a distraction, here are a few images from my time in the South Eastern part of the United States. The places where I grew up.

This week I have some special images to share. The Design Museum of Helsinki has an exhibition in their back yard for the summer. A unique terrace structure was erected a few weeks ago, and since then it has been on my mind to take some photos for the blog. This is not the first public architectural exhibit they have hosted, but certainly is my favorite thus far!

IMG_7092.jpg

Recently primary color schemes have been catching my attention in the most magical of moments. I took this inspiration one step further to enjoy a pair of my brand new Ashley Buchanan Jewelry earrings. Her silhouette style fits seamlessly into the minimal Scandinavian architectural design of the terrace including this blue bench.

IMG_7148.jpg

Keeping up with the theme, I had to keep things neutral for the ensemble. Although neutral for me is black, always black. This lovely jumpsuit is a special piece from my favorite store in the city, Dots. A local gem, and the best-kept secret for any of your LBD needs!

If this post has a soundtrack it would be My Favorite Things by the Lennon Sisters. I guess that is another hat trick here on  Nasty Trash! And if fashion, jewelry, or architecture are your favorite things, check out these links to learn more.

I have grown fond of groups in an instructional setting and in a creative environment. This week is no exception, I attended yet another workshop. That said, I failed to prepare, and did not double check the address on Google Maps before navigating the streets amidst Helsinki Pride Day. After a bit of a runaround, I managed to stumble in 15 minutes late. Thus, the photos here were not taken the day of the workshop, instead, it is a small sample of my Sunday.

IMG_6307.jpg

To preface this day, the Brush Lettering Workshop hosted by Tunagrafia held for an educational experience. The modern style of a classic practice was inspiring. I left with a reignited excitement for lettering, a new Rhodia paper pad, and 5 new writing utensils. One of which is the Tom Bow calligraphy pen, an instant favorite. This little gem creates all your favorite calligraphy curves, with the modern convenience of creative writing on the go.

IMG_6336.jpg

Trash Tip: If you are seeking to be better at hand lettering, practice random magazine quotes or music lyrics. This has to be one of my favorite writing exercises.

IMG_6347.jpg

Finally, I would like to mention this week that the combination of a personal creative outlet, combined with a new found excitement for lifestyle photography, and this perfect Sunday, has me feeling absolutely thrilled, a sensation that depreciates as the years go by. All my gratitude goes to this place to share content therefore, I prefer to no longer take beautiful hobbies, beautiful feelings, or beautiful days for granted.
