When the going gets tough, the tough go to free events. Yeah, it was a rather frugal summer for our little family. So to avoid a summer stupor, I decided to be proactive about attending free local events. This plan not only exceeded my expectations, it has become a monthly ritual and new adventure in itself.

IMG_9614.jpg

There are a lot of museums in Helsinki, and to organize each individual free day took a bit of strategizing. Inherently, I created a little reference list to keep track of all the activity! So today, Friday, September 1st, the stars aligned when I had to post the same day as an open event!

Kiasma is by far my favorite attraction in the city. Dead center, with one of the most intriguing interior architectural concepts I’ve ever experienced, the building is a an experience in itself. And to be frank, a free day in Helsinki is still slim pickins compared to most public attractions in larger cities.

Feel free to take a closer peek at my previous picture of the list I created. If you’re a local or just traveling through Finland, a museum visit is a must.

Until next week,

I have grown fond of groups in an instructional setting and in a creative environment. This week is no exception, I attended yet another workshop. That said, I failed to prepare, and did not double check the address on Google Maps before navigating the streets amidst Helsinki Pride Day. After a bit of a runaround, I managed to stumble in 15 minutes late. Thus, the photos here were not taken the day of the workshop, instead, it is a small sample of my Sunday.

To preface this day, the Brush Lettering Workshop hosted by Tunagrafia held for an educational experience. The modern style of a classic practice was inspiring. I left with a reignited excitement for lettering, a new Rhodia paper pad, and 5 new writing utensils. One of which is the Tom Bow calligraphy pen, an instant favorite. This little gem creates all your favorite calligraphy curves, with the modern convenience of creative writing on the go.

Trash Tip: If you are seeking to be better at hand lettering, practice random magazine quotes or music lyrics. This has to be one of my favorite writing exercises.

Finally, I would like to mention this week that the combination of a personal creative outlet, combined with a new found excitement for lifestyle photography, and this perfect Sunday, has me feeling absolutely thrilled, a sensation that depreciates as the years go by. All my gratitude goes to this place to share content therefore, I prefer to no longer take beautiful hobbies, beautiful feelings, or beautiful days for granted.

For some of you, it may have not been apparent the summer solstice just passed. For many of you, it may not ever register when a solstice occurs, but in Finland, it is the ultimate celebration of the season. The sun is visiting for the longest period of time all year, and it is the climax of the year for most civilians. From a photography perspective, that means you have to wait till about 10:00 pm for golden hour content.

I have enjoyed living here and celebrating this special occasion. Mostly, because it is always a contradiction to what it should be. It should be sunny, warm, and absolute euphoria in the air. In reality, my memories oh Juhannus (Midsummer in Finnish) are anything but! Grey skies, chilled temperatures, and multiple layers of clothing tend to pass the day.

IMG_5602.jpg

Another story about Finnish Juhannus is the empty city streets. Everyone packs up around Thursday and by Friday evening the city is left with only unknowing tourists and younger people living by the dusk light and catching a glimpse of a local bonfire. Although I did not get to make my ultimate midsummer photo, these sunset streets sure kept things entertaining until midnight.

The final image was that last on my SD card. It was the last image I took, just before turning off my camera and soaking it all in. The midnight sun, the beginning of summer and the end of spring. It is bittersweet to think about the days getting shorter again, but we will leave that thought for a future post. Until then, hyvää juhannusta!

This week I was blessed with a couple visitors from out of town, so when I was pressured to provide the most Helsinki experience ever, my first thought was to share the beautiful space that is the Kaisaniemi Botanic Gardens.

IMG_5000.jpg

I became familiar with this space after reading about it in Helsinki People Make The City and felt the images shared were some of the most understated and iconic scenes from around town. For botanist enthusiasts or people just seeking a couple good Instagram posts, this space does not disappoint.

IMG_4993.jpg

All photos here were taken with my usual Canon set up, excluding the first image. My wonderful guest and step sister waved her wand and made the most stunning image to emulate my favorite cover photo of Kirsikka Simberg.

IMG_4977.jpg

There are not enough words to express the beauty and detail this space contains. I plan to spend many more afternoons wandering these glass rooms. It is my prediction that varying weather would only make the experience, and the images, more stunning and unique. Until next week,

A few days ago a friend tipped me off about a local museum having free admission this week. I had yet to visit this particular location and took advantage of the local opportunity. To preface, I am not an art historian or an expert by any means. I simply enjoy being surrounded by grand old creations and taking in the beauty of it all.

IMG_4475.jpg

There can always be something valuable to take away from the experience of an exhibition. Even if the work is not to your taste. Take the time to notice the architecture of the building itself. The placement of each work and the story the entire collection tells. The details large and small are impressive.

IMG_4510.jpg

For the exhibits themselves, it does not make a difference if I am well versed on the subject or not, the collection will undoubtedly leave me impressed, humbled, and inspired. Not so inspired that I want to run out to the closest paint store and buy all the supplies, but simply, growing my appreciation for those committing to a craft or purpose for a greater reason.

Be sure to keep an eye out in your area for free admissions in local museums this season, as well as adding the Ateneum Art Museum to your must see list when visiting Helsinki!

Today was the Helsinki Air Show. In fact, it still is. As I write this the sound of jet engines can be heard from outside my window. It is a unique spectacle and this show in particular attracted tens of thousands. To be honest, I haven’t seen a crowd this large in the two years I have lived in Finland.

IMG_4040.jpg

Although I have never had much interest in heavy machinery, it is hard not to stop and be in awe of these man-made marvels. Not to mention I love geeking out with my Canon around a bunch of mostly old men with massive set ups just trying to get some cool pictures.

IMG_4210.jpg

The combination of the airshow plus all the other vendors that came out, and just the massive crowds, made the Friday vibe perfection. This year is the 100th year of Finland’s independence, so the season is packed with tons of different events. This bit was just a taste of all the events in store for the weeks ahead.

This week my health took a turn when I caught a cold. I was out for a few days and did not get a chance to do anything for the blog. So the following are some photos from a gorgeous midnight sunset from last summer. Even though the temperatures are hardly ever ideal, the midnight sun is really something special to witness.

Until next week,
