I have grown fond of groups in an instructional setting and in a creative environment. This week is no exception, I attended yet another workshop. That said, I failed to prepare, and did not double check the address on Google Maps before navigating the streets amidst Helsinki Pride Day. After a bit of a runaround, I managed to stumble in 15 minutes late. Thus, the photos here were not taken the day of the workshop, instead, it is a small sample of my Sunday.

To preface this day, the Brush Lettering Workshop hosted by Tunagrafia held for an educational experience. The modern style of a classic practice was inspiring. I left with a reignited excitement for lettering, a new Rhodia paper pad, and 5 new writing utensils. One of which is the Tom Bow calligraphy pen, an instant favorite. This little gem creates all your favorite calligraphy curves, with the modern convenience of creative writing on the go.

Trash Tip: If you are seeking to be better at hand lettering, practice random magazine quotes or music lyrics. This has to be one of my favorite writing exercises.

Finally, I would like to mention this week that the combination of a personal creative outlet, combined with a new found excitement for lifestyle photography, and this perfect Sunday, has me feeling absolutely thrilled, a sensation that depreciates as the years go by. All my gratitude goes to this place to share content therefore, I prefer to no longer take beautiful hobbies, beautiful feelings, or beautiful days for granted.

I have always enjoyed the craft of hand lettering, so this week I had the opportunity to participate in a Modern Caligraphy class at one of my favorite little paper shops here in Helsinki. Paperikauppa is a special little store filled with paper of all shapes, sizes, and textures. They have cards for every occasion and all the supplies to entice a stationary addict such as myself.

This is my second workshop for Nasty Trash and thanks to the blog it will be a habit I intend to keep. The course covered the basics of lettering and supplied participants with a starter calligraphy kit. I am a sucker for perks and benefits, and this kind of goodie bag is right up my ally!

If you’re someone like me who writes in a journal, agenda and takes notes on a daily basis, or if you are just someone interested in understanding a craft from centuries ago, calligraphy is a great art form to practice.

Stick around for more workshop reviews here on Nasty Trash, and if you are one of my pen pals, brace yourselves for some fine lettering, my friends!

This week is a special blog post for many reasons. Samuji is a brand I have adored in Finland for sometime now. This week the store hosted two workshops to paint a personalized porcelain mug with the designer himself, Pasi Kärkkäinen-Tunkelo in honor of their launch of the new Koti Mug.

Koti means home in Finnish.

The first reason this post is special is due to the experience itself. Finnish design is underrated and utterly flawless. I felt obligated to take advantage of an opportunity like this, to participate in a creative night. Being surrounded by such thoughtful and unique pieces is inspiring.

The second reason this post has been exceedingly special is simply based on the timeline. Valentines day is coming up and the event would be the perfect activity. Naturally I invited my husband along to this creative outlet, and the experience proved to be more appealing than traditional date methods.

Bonus, we get souvenirs after the date is over!

The third reason, and one that surprised me the most, the workshop brought back all of the art camp vibes from my childhood. I chose to use pointillism as my mug design, a technique that has been an old favorite for decades.

I would like to thank Samuji for hosting the workshop,

The designer, Pasi Kärkkäinen-Tunkelo, for sharing insight into the product and his creative method,

and my husband, happy valentines my dear.
